Brace Yourselves: 'Baby Shark' Is About to Become an Animated Series
In news that may make you want to swim away (doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo), the hit kids’ song “Baby Shark” is set to become an animated series on Nickelodeon, USA Today reports. The song’s creators, Pinkfong, partnered with the kids’ network to bring its animated music videos to life on the small screen in a move that’s almost guaranteed to be a success.
“Baby Shark” is to toddlers what Beyoncé is to the post-adolescent world: perfect, revered, and indispensable. The song also competes with some of the most beloved pop tracks with a mind-boggling 2.8 billion views on YouTube and a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Even global superstar Céline Dion can’t resist singing along.
“Baby Shark has captured the imagination of millions of fans around the world, so it’s no surprise it’s one of the top 10 most-viewed videos on YouTube, ever,” Ramsey Naito, EVP Nickelodeon Animation, said in a statement to Deadline. “At the heart of any popular piece of content is a terrific character, and we have a great opportunity to further explore the world of Baby Shark and follow this family through some great animated adventures on Nickelodeon.”
There’s only so much one group of Elasmobranchii can do (doo-doo), right? Wrong. This family — including Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, and Grandpa Shark — has proven they can fill an entire season with their finned shenanigans. They’ve sung about Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Christmas, their extended family, counting, shapes, and much more on Pinkfong’s YouTube channel.
While Deadline reports Nickelodeon hasn’t revealed how many episodes it plans to make or when fans can expect the project to premiere, one thing is for sure: Nick and Pinkfong are about to make a ton of money on Baby Shark merch.
“Our outstanding creative teams are moving fast to get more Baby Shark product across multiple categories to retailers, and our content team is excited to develop a terrific original animated series that will bring this property to new heights and even more fans,” Pam Kaufman, President, Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products told CNN.
If you thought Angry Birds was a favorite amongst the pre-K crowd, just wait until they can get their tiny hands on stuffed baby sharks, graphic tees, and toys that never stop singing.
Sorry, everyone. It seems it’s time to accept that “Baby Shark” will live on forever. All we can do now is wait for the premiere — and maybe invest in a killer set of noise-canceling headphones in the meantime.
