One drink, however, could help to reduce the level of visceral fat stored in the abdominal cavity thanks to a powerful ingredient. L-theanine, says sports nutritionist and fitness coach David Stache, could regulate your appetite. David Stache said: “L-theanine has been shown to help curb cravings and support appetite control.” By eating less foods, less calories will be consumed, thereby impacting visceral fat levels.

“This can contribute to weight loss or healthy weight maintenance,” Stache added.

L-theanine is found in green tea, meaning that drinking green tea could possibly suppress your appetite and reduce visceral fat.

The powerful compound is also said to have a “relaxing effect” by interacting with serotonin and dopamine.

Such a calming effect can reduce the likelihood of stress eating, Stache pointed out.

L-theanine can also improve a person’s quality of sleep, as the brain is able to switch off much more quickly.

Stache elaborated: “L-theanine reduces stress and anxiety levels which means that our brains can switch off quicker.

“It also increases the likelihood of us having a deeper and less interrupted sleep.”

Stache added: “L-theanine increases the alpha brain waves, which play a key role in REM sleep phase and in turn allows for a more restful sleep.

“Getting a good night’s sleep is highly beneficial, and the use of L-theanine to assist you in falling and staying asleep leaves you feeling energised for the day ahead and ready for a satisfying workout.”

Touching on a key point here, the reduction of visceral fat can only healthily be achieved by eating fewer calories and exercising.

Stache said that L-theanine also “improves mental performance”, leaving you feeling “more alert and focused”.

He stated that this can “give you the mental energy and drive you need to motivate yourself to push harder during your workouts”.

How much exercise do I need to do?

Experts at Health Direct emphasised that the “best way” to reduce visceral fat is to lose weight and have a healthy diet.

The optimum level of exercise requires 30 minutes of daily movement, which can include:

  • Brisk walking
  • Cycling
  • Aerobic exercise
  • Strength training.

Other measures include: being a non-smoker, reducing sugary drinks, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep.

Why should I get rid of visceral fat?

Although this type of body fat can be naked to the human eye, as it’s stored inside of the body, it releases toxic substances.

The health risks associated with a lot of visceral fat include:

  • Dementia
  • Cancer
  • Asthma
  • Liver disease
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Gout
  • Fertility problems
  • Lower back pain
  • Osteoarthritis.

For some people, large stores of visceral fat can be seen, as it causes a protruding stomach.

Too much visceral fat can lead to an “apple” shape but, even if you are thin, you can still have harmful levels.
