Headache hacks to help relieve the pain – from frozen veg to hot mustard powder

An intense and throbbing headache can negatively affect your day-to-day life – but it's a very common condition that most people will experience during their lives.

The main symptom of a headache is a pain in your head or face.This can be throbbing, constant, sharp or dull.

This can be caused by a multitude of reasons – including not enough food, dehydration, stress or bad sleeping positions from the night before.

Headaches can be treated with medication or stress management – but there are a few unconventional ways of easing the pain which don’t require medicines.

In fact, many tricks can help reduce your headache pain without you ever reaching for a pill.

One unusual way to get rid of your headache quickly involves soaking your feet in hot water.

By drawing blood to your feet, the hot-water footbath will ease pressure on the blood vessels in your head.

For a really bad headache, add a bit of hot mustard powder to the water.

Another unusual method involves putting a couple of ice cubes in a washcloth or using a bag of frozen vegetables.

Cold constricts blood vessels, and when they shrink, they stop pressing on sensitive nerves.

Since headache pain sometimes originates in nerves in back of your neck, try moving the compress to the muscles at the base of your skull for instant relief.

Pressing on certain points of your body could help relieve headaches. These points are found on the neck, head, shoulders, and hands.

According to Healthline, the union valley points are located on the web between your thumb and index finger.

To treat headaches:

  • Start by pinching this area with the thumb and index finger of your opposite hand firmly — but not painfully — for 10 seconds.
  • Next, make small circles with your thumb on this area in one direction and then the other, for 10 seconds each.
  • Repeat this process on the union valley point on your opposite hand.

Other ways to help relieve a headache include:

  • Massage therapy
  • Hot and cold applications
  • Aromatherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Breathing exercises
  • Change of diet
  • Certain teas

If your headache keeps coming back, painkillers don't work or you have a throbbing pain at the front or side of your head, you should see your GP.
