Hair loss could be caused by omega-3 deficiency

Certain nutrients are essential to ensure the body functions properly. Deficiencies can have lasting effects, even leading to illnesses. And in some cases they can result in hair loss, one expert said.

Doctor Manish Mittal, surgical director of Mittal Hair Clinic, spoke with about how an omega-3 deficiency can impact hair.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of polyunsaturated fats that can be found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds as well as seafood and fish.

Dr Mittal explained: “When we talk about omega-3, we are referring to three types of fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

“Omega-3 is essential for keeping us healthy, and maintaining normal human growth and development.

“It cannot be overstated how important it is to different aspects of our health, and one of the more surprising ways is how it affects our hair and scalp.

“One of the key values of omega-3 is its anti-inflammatory properties, which prevent hair follicles from becoming irritated and thus stop hair from falling out.

“It is natural for hair to fall out, but a deficiency in some nutrients will accelerate this process and could lead to thinning or even baldness.

“A lack of omega-3 has repeatedly been linked to hair becoming dry and brittle, which can then result in dandruff and an itchy scalp.

“Omega-3 helps to lubricate the hair and adds volume, elasticity and brightness, while also helping to keep your scalp from becoming overly dry and flaky.”

What does the research say?

“Research suggests that people taking a supplement containing omega-3 see an increase in hair density and reduced hair loss,” Dr Mittal said.

“Some experiments even found that supplements have helped people suffering from androgenetic alopecia, which is a form of hair loss.”

One study, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2015, found that consuming omega-3 and 6 supplements could tackle hair loss.

As part of the trial 120 healthy women were studied over a six-month period.

It said: “A six-month supplementation with omega-3 and 6 and antioxidants acts efficiently against hair loss in improving hair density and reducing the telogen percentage and the proportion of miniaturised anagen hair.”

How to boost omega-3 intake

Dr Mittal said: “It is not difficult to get omega-3 into your diet, so long as you know where to find it.

“The biggest source comes from fatty fish such as salmon, halibut, sardines, trout, cod, tuna and herring.

“If you don’t enjoy eating fish, you can also take a fish oil supplement.

“Shellfish and eggs are also good sources of omega-3.

“If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you may also find it in nuts, flaxseed and rapeseed oil.”

Other symptoms of an omega-3 deficiency include:

  • Skin irritation and dryness
  • Depression
  • Dry eyes
  • Joint pain and stiffness.
