When your pancreas stops producing sufficient insulin, or the insulin it does produce is not taken up by the cells, the result is often type 2 diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar – the main type of sugar found in blood. Without this mechanism, blood sugar levels can rise to dangerous levels, sparking a number of complications.

If you have type 2 diabetes, you must therefore find alternative means of lowering high blood sugar levels.

Diet provides an effective tool for lowering blood sugar levels and you don’t have to cut key items to curb them.

In fact, according to a new study published in the Isra Medical Journal, a herbal mixture you can make at home can cause blood sugar levels to plummet.

The mixture is ginger, garlic, lemon, apple cider vinegar and honey.

Eighty eight participants with cardiometabolic risk factors between 30 to 65 years were randomly selected and allocated into the experimental and placebo group.

Cardiometabolic risk refers to risk factors that increase the likelihood of experiencing vascular events or developing diabetes, such as high blood sugar levels.

For the experimental group, equal quantities of garlic, ginger, lemon juice and apple cider vinegar were boiled at 70°C for 15 minutes.

At the start and after 45 days, blood sugar levels and other markers were assessed, such as blood pressure and cholesterol.

The researchers found fasting blood sugar labels “significantly decreased” decreased over the course of the study in the experimental group.

Fasting blood sugar tests your average blood sugar levels after an eight-hour fast.

What’s more, notable reductions in blood pressure and harmful cholesterol levels were also observed in the group receiving the herbal mixture.

The findings of the study concluded that “ginger, garlic, lemon, apple cider vinegar and honey mixture exhibited anti-hyperlipidemia, antihypertensive and anti-diabetic properties”.

General dietary tips to lower blood sugar

Diabetes UK explains: “All carbs affect blood glucose levels so it’s important to know which foods contain carbohydrates. Choose the healthier foods that contain carbs and be aware of your portion sizes.”

Here are some healthy sources of carbohydrate:

  • Whole grains like brown rice, buckwheat and whole oats
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Pulses such as chickpeas, beans and lentils
  • Dairy like unsweetened yoghurt and milk.

Diabetes UK adds: “At the same time, it’s also important to cut down on foods low in fibre such as white bread, white rice and highly-processed cereals.

“You can check food labels when you’re looking for foods high in fibre if you’re unsure.”

Type 2 diabetes – symptoms to spot

Many people have type 2 diabetes without realising. This is because symptoms do not necessarily make you feel unwell.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes include:

  • Peeing more than usual, particularly at night
  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • Feeling very tired
  • Losing weight without trying to
  • Itching around your penis or vagina, or repeatedly getting thrush
  • Cuts or wounds taking longer to heal
  • Blurred vision.

“See a GP if you have any of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes or you’re worried you may have a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes,” advises the NHS.
