Best supplements for overall health: One to reduce depression, cancer risk and cholesterol
When it comes to ensuring our health is at tip-top form, it’s easy to get bombarded by the endless list of ailments and supplements to help with them. What if one could take one supplement to help with a number of conditions, making lives easier and more enjoyable? According to Ayurvedic medicine and leading health professionals, there is one for the job. Ashwagandha supplements are said to help prevent cancers, reduce blood sugar levels, reduce anxiety and depression, boost testosterone, increase muscle strength, and lower cholesterol. How?
Animal and test-tube studies have found that withaferin — a compound in ashwagandha — helps induce apoptosis, which is the programmed death of cancer cells.
In a study, molecular targets and mechanisms of cancer prevention and treatment was further investigated.
The study said: “The plants used in Ayurvedic medicine, which has been practised in India for thousands of years for the treatment of a variety of disorders, are rich in chemicals potentially useful for prevention and treatment of cancer.
“Withania somnifera (commonly known as Ashwagandha in Ayurvedic medicine) is one such medicinal plant whose anticancer value was realized over four decades ago after isolation of a crystalline steroidal compound (withaferin A) from the leaves of this shrub.
“The root and leaf extracts of W. somnifera are shown to confer protection against chemically-induced cancers in experimental rodents, and retard tumor xenograft growth in athymic mice.
Ashwagandha supplements are said to also help with both cholesterol imbalances and diabetes.
Having an irregularity in cholesterol levels is often found in those suffering from type 2 diabetes.
Ashwagandha helps to enhance diabetes side effects, decreasing blood glucose levels by 12.5 percent.
Ashwagandha keeps up insulin creation and expands insulin affectability which enables the body to go through glucose productively.
This makes the supplements a one-stop answer for individuals with both diabetes and elevated cholesterol.

It’s important to speak with your GP before embarking on any new supplements.
In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the effects of ashwagandha root in reducing stress and anxiety in adults was investigated.
The study noted: “Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension, which can lead to underperformance and adverse clinical conditions.
“Adaptogens are herbs that help in combating stress.
“Ayurvedic classical texts, animal studies and clinical studies describe Ashwagandha as a safe and effective adaptogen.”
Patients who took the Ashwagandha supplement saw a significant reduction in their serum cortisol levels.
The findings of this study suggest that a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively improves an individual’s resistance towards stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life.
Ashwagandha supplements may have powerful effects on testosterone levels and reproductive health.
In one study of 75 infertile men, the group treated with ashwagandha showed increased sperm count and motility.
What’s more, the treatment led to a significant increase in testosterone levels.
The researchers also reported that the group who took the herb had increased antioxidant levels in their blood.
