Best supplements for eyes: The ‘superfood’ found to protect against eye diseases

Eye health is incredible important to maintain if you want to prevent conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and even sight loss. As well as having regular eye tests and wearing the correct glasses, eating a heathy balanced diet is important for eyes. Experts recommend eating plenty of vegetables and fruit to protect against a range of different eye diseases. But the addition of a goji berries – dubbed a ‘superfood’ in recent years – could also play a part in preventing eye problems.

The same antioxidants can also stop damage from UV light, free radicals and oxidative stress, all of which can impact eye health in a negative way.

One study, reported int he American Academy of Optometry’s journal Optometry and Vision Science, found seniors who drank goji berry juice for 90 days increased zeaxanthin and other antioxidant levels significantly.

A second study reported in the journal Drug Design, Development and Therapy showed goji berries protect the retina from the ganglion cells responsible glaucoma – a condition that can lead to vision loss.

Goji berries could interest with some drugs, for example if you take warfarin (a blood thinner) some experts advise avoiding goji berries.

The superfood could also interact with diabetes and high blood pressure drugs.

If you’re taking any other medications for other conditions, speak with your doctor first before taking goji berries.

Vitamin E is also important in helping maintain health eyes, according to Holland & Barrett. 

It explains: “Vitamin E is a group of eight compounds, including tocopherol, found in many foods.

“It’s a fat-soluble vitamin, which means you don’t need to take it every day because it’s stored in the liver until needed.”

While there’s no specific recommendation for vitamin E in the UK, the NHS advises 3mg a day for women and 4mg a day for men.

The European Food Safety Authority recommends 11mg for women and 13mg for men.

The best food sources of vitamin E include:

  • Wheat germ oil
  • Almonds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Avocado
  • Mango
  • Kiwis

There is a chance you may not be getting enough vitamin E from your diet, and where a vitamin E supplement may prove helpful.

The high street health store adds: “If you have a health condition that prevents your body from absorbing fats, talk to your doctor first.

“Avoid taking a vitamin E supplement if you have iron-deficiency anaemia, hyperthyroidism or are taking anticoagulant medicines.

“As well as boosting the immune system, studies have found vitamin E supplements can help improve period pain, nail health and eczema symptoms.”
