Today’s topic is on carbohydrates. Most people’s favorite macronutrient, haha. This one I was excited to write about because I think this is the macronutrient that has the most confusion. There are people who completely demonize carbs and others who think you should eat nothing but carbs. Who what’s a girl to do?
My hope is that this post gives you the knowledge to make informed decisions. Let’s get started!
–Energy: Carbohydrates are your main source of energy. Your body craves it! If you are deprived of carbs you will have craving because your body is craving that energy!
–Fiber: If you are eating whole food carbohydrates are going to be where you get your fiber from. Fiber is key for gut and whole body health.
–Weight maintenance: Believe it or not, whole food carbohydrates are a huge part of weight maintenance long term.
What are Carbs:
–Fruits: Apples, Bananas, Oranges, Etc.
–Vegetables: Yams, Broccoli, Squash, Spinach, Etc.
–Grains: Oats, Millet, Sprouted Breads, Etc.
–Sugar/Most Processed Foods: This is one of the reasons carbs get a bad rap. These foods eaten in excess contribute to inflammation, weight gain, acne, etc. These should definitely be eaten in moderation. Examples are candy, white bread, protein bars, etc.
–Dairy (If you eat It): I do not believe dairy to be a health food. It does contribute to acne and a host of other things. If you want more information just type it on PubMed. This is an individual decision, do what works for you ethically and heath wise. Examples are cheese, yogurt, whey protein, etc.
I am not going to do recipes only because carbs are in everything haha. Make fruit smoothies, oats, yams with cinnamon, millet with olive oil, etc. If anyone wants a post with great healthy carb recipes leave a comment below and I will!
I hope this helps. Remember balancing your macronutrients is key. Eat from all the food groups. One macronutrient does not make you fat. Yes some people do better with certain macronutrients but that does mean the others are bad.
