So today we are going to continue the macronutrient series. If you aren’t sure what that is check out yesterday’s post on proteins!:)
Today I want to cover fats. It feels like people are either superrr low fat or super high fat and there is not a lot of people eating a moderate amount of healthy fats in the context of a well rounded diet. So here we go….
*Helps absorb fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E and K). It’s really helpful to eat fat with vegetables. You absorb more nutrients that way. For instance, when I make vegetable juice I’ll add 1/2tsp. evening primrose oil or TBS. hemp seeds.
*Has 9 calories per gram verse the 4 that carbs and protein have. They help a lot with satiety. So if you find yourself always hungry try adding more healthy fats in your diet.
*Works as an energy source during exercise.
*Fats such as monounsaturated fats and omega 3’s help with disease prevention. Trans, poly and saturated fats may increase disease risk so these should be eaten in moderation (except for trans fats which you should probably avoid!). Like yesterday if you want to purchase any of them, on all of the links you can use the coupon code RQANXY.
*Avocado: Full of monounsaturated fats and oh so creamy! Also a great source of vitamins E and excellent for the skin! It is also probably the easiest fat to digest!
*Chia/Hemp Seeds: Full of omega 3’s, fiber and great for cleansing the bowels;).
Ways to Use it: Chia Pudding, Hemp Milk, Green Smoothies
*Coconut: Full of metabolism boosting MCT’s and is very supporting to the thyroid.
Ways to Use it: Kale Chips, Coconut “Oatmeal”, Coconut Butter by the Spoonful!
*Ghee: If you are not vegan Ayurveda uses ghee in a lot of healing ways. It is very supportive for the hormones and full of fat soluble vitamins.
Ways to Use it: Cook with it like you would butter or oil
*Sprouted Nuts/Seeds: Full of fiber, protein and healthy fats. Studies show people who eat nuts and seeds maintain a healthy weight easier and are healthier overall. Sprouting them makes it easier to digest.
*Udo’s Omega 3 Oil: If you like oils this way is very high in omega 3’s making it great for your skin, weight loss (in moderation), and inflammation.
Ways to Use it: Green Smoothies or topped over veggies with sea salt
I hope this inspires you to eat healthier and balanced. If you have any questions leave them below!
Have a great day!
