Today I wanted to do a post similar to the one yesterday. However, today I wanted to talk about things to help with depression. There is a huge difference between depression and anxiety. Anxiety is anything from nervous energy to panic attacks where as depression is anything from seasonal sadness to extreme depression. A lot of the times depression can be DRAMATICALLY helped by a few lifestyle changes. The only thing here is that a lot of the times there isn’t a motivation to do anything when you are depressed. I want to encourage you to try to make small changes. I know it’s so hard but once you get to feeling a little better you’ll want to start adding more and more. Lastly, some people do need medication because the chemicals in their brain is a little off. Never be afraid to do what’s needed for your health honestly. Try to review the anxiety post as well because I am going to try not to repeat tips and those tips will be helpful as well!
So let’s get started:
*Get outside! There is this trap that is easy to get into when you are depressed where you never leave the house. I promise you once you start getting out you will feel so much better. Try starting out by going out just two minutes a day or making an appointment so you are forced to go out because people are waiting on you. PS. Even if it is cold you still have to go outside;).
*Find a hobby/passion. This can help to shift your focus.
*SET GOALS. This is probably my #1 tip. Set goals If life is not going your way find a way to change it. Life is in your control. Make a dream board, write them down, start a job, just work work work. Dreams take a while to make happen but you will get there if you do not quit.
*Work on yourself/Self Help. I know this stuff seems cheesy. Trust me I do. I talk a lot about it here. However, it really helps with being successful. Look at all the most successful people a lot of them take time to work on themselves daily. I’ve grown to like Tony Robbins and The Secret quite a bit.
*Believe in something bigger than you. You do not have to Christian or anything but there is a reason this is key in the twelve steps.
*Find Community. This is a huge deal. There are lots of places: a yoga studio, church meetup.com and lot of other places.
(I think the same diet tips apply as the anxiety post!)
*5-HTP: Helps in upping serotonin levels.
*Theanine: Can help trigger the release of GABA in the brain.
*Omegas: I prefer a vegan one for ethical reasons. Omegas are good for building optimal brain chemistry.
*Vitamin D: Can help combat depression. Especially in places that don’t get a lot of sun. I really like the KIND brand because it is food based and absorbs well.
*B Complex Vitamins: Helps with stress too.
You can use coupon code IHI491 if you want to try some of these out. I REALLY hope this helps and never be afraid to talk to someone you love about how you feel. Have a great day!
